Does # on FB mean anything?

Is a hashtag on FB the same as on Twitter? Why do people use # on FB? I used one once and then decided not to. Last year one of my friends kept taking pictures of her child on 1st day of school etc and used a # for it-it seems that strangers then could see these pictures.

Many people sync up their Twitter account to Facebook, so that when they make a tweet it also gets posted to Facebook. (Or maybe the other way around, I don't do it so I wouldn't know first-hand)

The one useful thing about it (I guess) is that Facebook can do searches by hashtag like Twitter does.
