A List

Post by Mirah »

I am going to list all of the things I think I might need for my first trip of living remotely. I mean besides the obvious of clothing-winter clothing especially. (I might only pack 5 outfits! Okay 6! It will include boots and socks and everything I need to keep me warm and dry.

TP-how much do I need to order for myself? I can have some sent up from the store if I run out. Seriously I think I better get a cost co account.
Do y'all have Cost Co's where you are?

Tooth Paste. Extra tooth brushes.
Klenex to blow my nose. Bandanas work too!

Food.
Lots of it.
What kind?

My rice maker and tiny crock pot. I will make soups I guess.
Can I travel uplake succesfully with eggs? Maybe the garden guy has some from his chickens-tho they don't lay much in the winter I suppose.

I will need cereal. Milk. Will I just live w/out milk then?

Cheese and corn tortillas. Do I even have a microwave? I have no idea.

I feel like I am going to starve. I need some kind of easy junk food to sustain me. I can order off amazon or from the local grocery store to have it shpped on the boat M,W,F or Sun.

I hope the locals will help me out with all of these questions.

Are you living off the grid?

Outdoors?

How remote is it? Access to groceries?

What appliances will you have?

Internet?

Are you moving to the wilderness, or just staying there for a couple weeks?

I don't know how hard it will be for you to get fresh milk, but you can get evaporated milk in cans. It is delicious, but not the same as whole milk. I like it in coffee, and sometimes I used it in place of milk when I cook.

The job I have accepted is at the other end of the lake. Near where I used to live, but a different situation as this one is more independent. The only way to get there is by boat. So whenever I "move" there I will take the essentials w/ me and a large amount of food. Any food or supplies I need after that will have to be ordered and shipped on the boat. Boat days in the winter are Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun. So I imagine I get the order in by Tue or Thur to get them delivered the next day (by Noon)

I have a place to live that is heated by a wood stove. I don't think it is considered off grid. I have a starlink dish that I just have to get set up w/ internet. Others have starlink up there-so hopefully they can help if I have questions.

I plan on being there long term, but also I told myself I could just do this for a year.

I feel :yay: and :wallbang:

Do you add water to evaporated milk? Like for cereal?

I don't! I suppose you could, but it won't taste like whole milk anyway. It's a little sweeter tasting.

Yes. Tho I don't know my address yet. Everyone who lives there has a post office box and I wonder if any are available?!
Do post office workers get a discount?
Can people just send stuff to the post office addressed to me?

Real easy.
UPS and Fed Ex deliver to the warehouse at the boat company. The boat company puts the packages on the boat to deliver uplake. And an employee stopps by the post office in the morning and picks up the mail to put the mail on the boat.
Anything over 70 lbs will go on the barge.

I think one of the important things for you to find out is how long it takes from when you order supplies to when you get them. Then you can decide how soon to put orders in.

I set up accounts w/ all of the local grocery stores today. Most of them ask for 1-2 days notice for anything to be put on the boat, which departs in the morning only. I bought coconut milk and hemp milk that can sit on a shelf.

I will not be able to order ice cream. So....I better learn how to make it! I love ice cream!

I only have email for my "new boss" and he hasn't responded to my last email. So I emailed him again and emailed the person currently at the location.
I feel frustrated in not knowing the time line and I know that when they do tell me-I will only have a few days to prepare (based on what I've seen others go through that posted about it online)
I really could call it quits on this whole thing if it keeps up much longer because I am not working at all and will need to start bringing in some income.
At this point maybe I could do it but I will tell them I'm not ready until January!!!!

Having snow on the ground at the moment doesn't help the thoughts of moving either. I'm just going to lean in to this feeling right now and do what I need to do.
